Here is a peek at my reading lesson plans for the week so you can see how it works in my classroom. We have a 2 hour ELA block. (Because of ESE push in and since my team does flexible grouping, we really have to stick to the master schedule.)
Friday is Apple Investigation Day where the first grade classes visit each first grade teacher for an apple activity, so it is different.
Mini Lesson 2's are from Kim Adsit's unit. My team saw her at the Common Core Academy in Chicago this summer. We have been using her units this year and they are FABULOUS!!! We purchased all 9 units! Click {HERE} if you are interested. I highly recommend them!
I also do writing whole group. I am not ready for them to be writing on their own quite yet!
Here are some pictures of our Daily 3 in action!

So, are YOU able to do 5 rotations? If yes, PLEASE tell me how you fit it all in!
Meredith
I am curious how many minutes do you use for a mini lesson and how many in rotations? This is a something I am struggling with. Also do you ever pull small guided level reading groups or do mainly individual students reading instruction? I enjoy learning how other firsties are working the D5.
ReplyDeleteI just published a post to answer your question! Thanks!!!
DeleteHey Meredith, I love hearing other's take on Daily Five. You have a great way of instituting choice in your Daily 3! I like it because it has the element of choice and solves the problem of overcrowding anywhere. I think this will be the next step for us after Christmas. Because I'm using Daily 5 time to pull Guided Reading groups in my K5 class, I can't stop for the "Mini-Lessons". So, I'm basically using it as a workshop model. If they could ever get their stamina way up to 20 mins., I could...not going to happen in my K5, I don't think (when we're struggling with 8-10 right now. We do a Reading Skill mini-lesson before our snack and then a Phonics or writing mini-lesson before our Daily 5. But you've given me the inspiration to think it through again and not be complacent with where we are.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I also only have 3 Daily 5 rotations a day but we have a designated whole group writing time and word work time so I guess technically students do 5 language arts/writing activities a day. Students can also choose to do writing & word work during our rotation time but have more guided activities during our whole group time (if that makes sense). For example: during D5 Word Work students can build words with magnetic letters, do word puzzles, etc & during our whole group word work time {Words Their Way spelling} they have more paper/pencil activities they are 'required' to do. Always fun seeing what D5 looks like in other classrooms :)
ReplyDeleteYour bookmarks are great! I was thinking about creating something like that along with my paint sticks. I blogged about my paint sticks today. :) Do you have those for sale somewhere?

Check out my recent post! I put them on TPT, the link is in the post! Loved your paint stick idea!
DeleteHi Meredith!
ReplyDeleteGreat Daily 5 Post! This is my fourth year using Daily 5 and it took me awhile to let that "control" go alittle... Yes, I do let the kids pick, but sometimes they pick based on "teacher suggestion" (wink, wink!) I would love to have you stop by. I just joined the linky too!
Thanks for sharing!
